In the state of California, it is common for the seller to be responsible for paying the transfer taxes. Though, there are a number of cities where the buyer is responsible. Below is a list of counties and cities in California where buyers are responsible for paying either a portion or the entirety of transfer tax:
County with Buyer-Paid Transfer Tax:
- Los Angeles County
- Applies countywide, including unincorporated areas and all incorporated cities within Los Angeles County.
Cities with Buyer-Paid Transfer Tax:
Regardless of the county they are in, the following cities impose transfer taxes that must be paid by the buyer:
- Culver City
- Alameda
- Albany
- Hayward
- Oakland
- Piedmont
- San Leandro
- El Cerrito
- Richmond
- Sacramento
- San Mateo
- Mountain View
- Palo Alto
- Vallejo
- San Jose
- Berkeley
- Emeryville
